CHAPTER

SEVENTEEN

Nanine Laurent decided her best strategy was to check herself out of the hospital.

Her doctor tried to argue with her, but like other bombastic men she’d crossed swords with, he soon gave up under her withering stare. How could anyone else purport to know how she felt? she’d told her doctor as she tapped her chest. Only she knew.

Her tests had come back fine, and he’d done what he could. Now it was up to her. She would take her daily aspirin, but her best medicine was being with her Courses and taking care of her restaurant and whatever other trouble might be lurking in the shadows.

Yes, she would come back for checkups, but sitting any longer in a hospital bed wasn’t going to make her feel better. In fact, she might as well put one foot in the grave if she languished there much longer under those rough, worn white sheets.

His clipped good luck as he left told her she’d won. Soon she was being discharged, dressed in the slightly wrinkled clothes she’d worn upon arrival. Her only saving grace was the fact that she smelled of Chanel No. 5 and her color was enhanced by her darkly lined brows and lipstick-red lips. More like herself.

When the cab she’d taken from the hospital deposited her in front of her restaurant, she pressed her hand to her aching heart as she beheld its naked frame. The Nanine’s she’d created was like her very self: stripped naked of everything it had been and forced to be reborn into something new. She took a moment to gather herself on the sidewalk, closing her eyes and letting the afternoon sunlight wash over her face.

Her father used to say, what more did anyone need than the sunshine, a good meal, and working with one’s passion? She could suddenly see the yellow mustard fields he’d walk in Lyon as he hummed an old Edith Piaf song to himself. Brooke would call this visualization, but Nanine’s mother had always referred to them more simply as good thoughts, the kind to lift any downtrodden spirit.

A slow smile started on her face as she opened her eyes and beheld her beloved neighborhood. Its familiar sights and smells wrapped around her in love. The faint aroma of baguettes from the patisserie around the corner made her think of Thea. The street was quiet with everyone tucked away in their homes for lunch. Well, everyone save the two female tourists walking toward her wearing New York T-shirts and designer jeans.

“Excuse me?” the younger blonde asked. “Do you speak English?”

She thought about lying, but she needed all the good karma she could take at the moment. “Yes.”

“Do you know what happened to Nanine’s? I can’t find anything online about why it’s closed. Have you eaten there? It’s one of the best restaurants in Saint-Germain.”

Nanine put a finger to her lips. Her father used to say signs came when they were most needed, like the rain did to the fields during dry spells.
